A Powerful Perfection

I am flawless.

I am beautiful.

I am smart.

I am worth it.

I will put on all my makeup,

Or I won’t.

I will wear a sparkling gown,

Or I won’t.

I go out on the town,

Or I don’t,

But either way I know,

I’ll be whatever I want.

I will walk these crowded halls,

And treat them like a runway.

I will hold my head up high,

And jump up to the skyway.

Because I was made as carefully,

And as beautifully as stained glass,

With colors reflecting in the sunlight,

Like gentle breezes dancing at midnight.

I am a creation to behold.

I am art.

I am a living, breathing reminder

That there is love in this world.

That there is hope in my future.

That I was given the chance to do something

With this little life I’m living.

I have made mistakes.

I have lived my despairs,

But it is my prayer,

That one day we can all find harmony,

Find peace in the outstretched fingers,

Of our own humanity.

And it is my hope,

That one day,

We will put that magazine down,

And wipe our mascara streaked eyes,

And realize that we are majestic.

We don’t need to be a size 3,

To be as lovely as we can be.

It is my dream,

That someday we will see,

That beauty is in the eye of the beholder,

So let the world behold its latest creation.

Let the world behold,

That beauty comes not from a face, or a figure,

But from a finger,

That is tracing the ever changing lines of this place,

That is new. That is home. That is true.

Let the world behold the beauty

Of the difference I can make.

I am flawless because I have power,

I have power to make a difference.

I have power to change a life.

Beauty is the power to change your mind.

To change the way you thought things were.

Beauty is an empty stem,

Blooming into life.

Beauty is a child’s first look,

At his mother’s tired smile and glossy eyes.

Beauty is not in numbers,

Or in pictures

From the book they decided

Determined what we thought we knew,

What we thought we’d have to do,

To be told that we were pretty.

I can look in the mirror,

Through new eyes.

I can see a face staring back at me,

Say hello,

And tell that girl staring that

She is the best she she can be.

I am flawless.

I am beautiful.

I am smart.

I am worth it.

Because I have been given breath,

Given life so that I may live,

So that I may learn of the world around me,

So that I may teach the things this life has taught me.

To spread a lifetime of wisdom,

And to welcome all to a kingdom,

Of kindness and of understanding,

Of accepting that we all wear different dresses,

Cut from the same cloth.

Beauty does not come “one size fits all,”

Beauty does not come from a bottle,

Or from a shelf,

It does not wear a price tag,

Or a designer label.

It wears the dreams we have created for ourselves.

It wears the history of thousands of years

Of girls wishing they’d been thin enough,

Of boys wishing they’d been strong enough,

Of people wishing they’d been the same enough,

To be told they were accepted.

But let’s accept that we each have something to contribute,

We each have something unique and wonderful,

That is waiting to burst from the shadows of our doubt.

We are flawless for the things that make us ourselves,

Flawless for what we identify to be.

I am flawless

When I sing too loud,

And cry too often.

I am flawless

When I love too much,

And let go of too little.

Yes, I am flawless,

And I dare you,

To look me in the eye,

And tell me I am anything but.
