Privilege at a Glance

Look outside

through your window of immunity

are you afraid of what you’ll see?

do not be afraid, the steel bars of supremacy will keep you safe

just take a peek

Soon you will not be scared of the unknown

but the reality of life

notice the fires

ashes as dark as the skin which it came from

flames as red as the blood it feeds from

rivers of hate flow through the streets

tears of sadness flow through the hearts

you see the hearts, laying out on the sidewalk

can you see them through your fogged window?

Take a look

Look outside

through your window of liberty

you have nothing to hide, we all look the same

just take a look

You don’t see color now but

Soon you will see our differences

but the difference to be same

ideal beauty

to act

to look

to feel

vain, pallid, weak, pale

To be excepted

you’ll begin to question why anyone would want to reflect the sun's rays instead of absorbing its power

We want you to reflect light, so you and the people around become blinded

Whatever you do

don’t put your shades back on, to block the light

don’t pull your shades down to block the mirror of inhumanity

open your eyes

you mind

your heart

And

Look outside

Cause if you can’t see it

it’s not their right?

Look

Through your window of freedom

Do not be apprehensive, you will see the real

Just take a gander

justice will not be served until those who are unaffected

are as outraged as those who are

if you don’t have to think about it

now that’s privilege

Check your privilege

Check your glasses of protection

Are you afraid of death

If you allow your eyes to glance out of the window of chance

make sure you wipe the blood that has been smeared

Do not be afraid

It is not your blood

Be afraid

It will soon be your blood

It will soon be a mix of all our blood

A B AB O

A mix

Everyone

Equal

Equitable

As it should be

Open your window of realization

Take in the breath of equality

You smell that?

It is not the smell of hate

but love

It is not the smell of oppression

but democracy

It is not the smell of death

but life

A new beginning

Look outside

through your window of privilege

are you afraid of what you’ll see?

do not be afraid, the steel bars of supremacy will keep you safe

just take a peek

And question

Whitness

Our world

- People are scared of the unknown. Whitness is a very unknown measure of power
to the people bearing the skin. This poem explains that we (I identify as white) need
to open our eyes, and take off our distorted lenses, and view the world as it lays before
us. The only way to eraticate hate is to have the source recognized first.
