The Promise of Freedom

You told me I was free,

Free to be whoever I want to be.

Free to fly,

Free to succeed,

Free to reach for the sky,

Free to love

Freedom is what You promised,

A glass ceiling is what You delivered,

America, “land of the free” is really,

America, land of empty promises,

Because though some are free, others remain

Shackled

Battered

Dead

Hate hides behind a progressive mask

Racism boasts behind a tempered man

Misogyny holds their hand
