Realize

They cover you in make up, and then they shave your hair

They talk about how we've all come so far and how lucky you are to live in these times

Then they tell you who you should be and why

They fail to realize that forcing you to become someone you're not doesn't count as fair

They fail to realize that objecting a different set of traits is still objectification

They fail to realize how scary it is to never to be safe

I am not allowed to stand before you hairy legged and cleaned face

I am not allowed to stand before "skinny" or "curvy" or "fat"

I am not allowed to stand before you free

Being feminine is considered a disgrace to my gender; being masculine is essential to my fate

They fail to realize that equal does not mean the same

So I retreat to my curtain, balancing the masculine responsibilities with female delicacies

And I hope you

Realize
