The Reign of Uncertainty

Location

"Do you know what you want to do?"

No, I think nodding

Lips shut, mind whirring through possibilities

The future is too big, too uncertain for a girl

To try to decide what she wants to do for forty years

But I think and I observe

“Do you know what you want to do?” I ask myself

I shy away, allowing distractions and responsibilities overrun me

I think of others and envy their certainty

Futures planned, lives determined

And curse my own inability

Months pass

College looms

“Do you know what you want to do?”

All I think of is those that suffer

From indecision…inability…depression…medical complications

Suddenly the answer is clear

“Help others”

They frown

I smile

The future is still uncertain

But helping others, nursing them, caring

That is what can change my life

And the lives of others
