The Rise and Fall of Greatness

America the great.

Great.

What a funny word.

Great.

It packs so much into only a few letters.

Great.

America is great.

Sort of.

America has a beautiful history of freedom and democracy,

but how free our we really and what does democracy really look like?

You see, when I turn on the TV,

I'm told we have to Make America Great Again,

but great is subjunctive.

You tell me great is bigotry and racism and sexism.

You want to see democracy that is so far from being for the people,

we've become a joke to other nations.

But then again we haven't always been a joke.

No, I don't think we've always been a joke.

I think there just might have been a time when America was great.

Great is subjunctive though,

And I guess to some people

Being great is a joke.
