The River

A man gets in a raft in a river

And sets himself adrift

He has no idea where he wants to go

Some days the river is slow and calm

Other days  old Neptune throws a tantrum.

But the man stays in the water.

When the waters are still he won’t drink,

For still water is bad for your health.

Despite the bad waters, he drifts even now.

When he’s hungry, he’ll send his net into the water

For the river’s full of nutrients.

Occasionally he drifts into polluted spots

Where careless behavior has dirtied the river

When he left the river he felt empty inside.

It took him years to figure out why

When asked about it he said

“For years the river was my sole companion

And I shall never see her again.

I too am haunted by the waters.”
