Role Model

years ago

i saw you

in the grass

under the sun

i wanted to

wrap my arms

around your leg

and shoot you

with a water gun

but you

unlike many

didn’t like little hugs.

you

unlike many

didn’t beg for love

we wished

that one day

you’d change your mind

then we wished

that one day

you’d show us

what’s hiding

behind your happy eyes.

you did

but you waited

until we could comprehend

that role models

are only role models

when they aren’t your friend.

-be careful what you wish for
