Roots

What happened to our roots? We let them wither like weeds as soon as segregation was outlawed. What happened to our roots? We dug them up and felt like we didn't need them anymore once we started joining hands with the white man, thinking the storm was over. What happened to our roots? We left the beautiful garden of struggle and forgot to keep what held us together alive. Our roots. The very epitome of who we are as a people. Our roots. That is what held us together when the police hosed us down, killed our sons, and comforted us while running from the massa. Our roots. Brothers and sisters, let us not forget our roots. For our very roots are the very veins that hold the blood and spirit of who we are.Let us not forget our roots.
