The Safety Room

2024

No guns in sight.

The law took them away,

they took away our rights.

It was a bitter winter day,

and my father was in Iraq.

My mom, sister, and I

lay here in our bedstead.

When we hear the intruder come in,

we knew one or all of us were off to meet the maker that night.

He fled in and went straight to my mothers room.

We hear her cry "Please no" as he pulls back his trigger,

for my mother was so defensless.

She had no guns to bear with her.

My mom was killed that night,

my sister Caroline too.

But I stayed safe,

I was hiding in the gun room.
