Set It Free

yesterday you were out sick

you missed the history lecture

so i copied another set of notes for you

I love you, you said, only it came out as “thanks”

I love you too, I replied, only it came out as “of course”

i first knew you loved me before you even told me

when you offered me a ride home even though you lived

five minutes away from school

and i, fifteen

when you said “see you tomorrow”

I heard I love you

i first knew I loved you when

i found myself walking the long way to lunch

hoping to pass you in the hallway

you waved at me from across the hall

and i waved back

one day i said “hey” but i

was hoping you heard I love you

this morning i found out i

got into my dream school

and you were not at all melancholy you were

brimming with pride

even though i would be across the country

you said “ I  l o v e  y o u “

and I heard

I support you

and I said “ I  l o v e  y o u  t o o”

but I know you heard me.

I will always walk the longer way

so I might see your face more often

Just as you will always drive a little farther

so I could get home safely

Even when the space between us seems

vast and insurmountable I know

that you and I

will always go the distance.

when you love something, you set it free.

because I know our love is Real Love when we both are free.
