It has been my way,

I have realized,

to keep my mouth shut

around people.

It is easier

to keep it shut,

to close opinions

and arguments.

Everybody

thinks you're polite,

nice, quiet, constant.

But it's lonely.

With no voice, no shout,

not a whisper

to say who you are,

you don't connect.

Most people don't expect

the loyalty

rushing, riveting

through my body.

When I choose to speak,

to be your friend,

you have me for life.

No take-backs.

Unfortunately,

other people

don't work quite like me,

and don't stick much.

Friends are hard to make,

especially if talking

is an optional sport.

But they're worth the wait.

Usually.
