Soldier Who

Soldier Who

Soldier who trains all day and night

And counts the days until departure

who is conditioned and unyielding

who is a dog tag and bayonet

whose hair is always shaved

too much war to come home today

who writes in letters I love you

and tells me in person I missed you

whose eyes burn with devotion

has to be over seas today

sleeps on his cot and waits for commands

who used to laugh more often

is hardened

is a nail beaten down deep

is worn down packs his bags

is coming home today

is patiently waiting for inner peace

who talks to me in my heart

is a uniform and a patrol cap and big rough boots

who breathes in and out in and out in and

out again

is the backbone of this country

asking for the date to return

when do we leave when?
