They Say You Can't Dream in Color

They say you can't dream in color

But if that is true then why are my dreams so green

Green shoots sprouting out of grey dirt

Green dark forests in every direction filled with green dark pine trees

Green opportunities growing out of dark dirt and I believe, truly believe, that I can do anything,

that I can have a future filled with green life

They say you can't dream in color

So why are my dreams so blue

Blue the color of the ocean that stands in my way and yet is the gateway to my life

Blue the sky that mocks me with its endless depthless soulless freedom

Blue rooms and blue papers and inky blue stamps

Blue that I pursue and am afraid to lose but in the end it loses me

They say you can't dream in color

But I swear my dreams are filled with red

Red stop signs at the corners of crooked streets

Red dull eyes screaming no, you can't

Red with contempt when they look at me, different,

I don't belong and I've never in my life seen so much red

They say you can't dream in color

But grey isn't a color

Grey is steel factories and gray skies and gray people

I watch the street as the gray people go by to their gray jobs and gray lives

I ask a man what color he dreams in

And he asks me what is a color

What is a color?

My mind doesn't know what to tell my mouth to say

They say you can't dream in color

So I have stopped dreaming at all.
