The Things That Count

I want you to know me,

But the part of me I want to show

Isn’t what everyone else can see.

I can’t be quantified by what I do

Or who I spend my time with.

You can’t analyze me

With a t-chart of my likes and dislikes.

Don’t trap me into a stereotype

Because of one characteristic.

I am not a number.

Don’t recite a list of my achievements

Or believe that I can be reduced

To what I do or how I do it.

Learn my motivations, why I do things.

Watch how they make me feel.

Learn my passions and my ambitions.

Know my hopes, dreams, and insecurities.

Know my heart and my soul.

I want you to see me as a friend

And not a statistic.
