Unleashing My Voice

The utterance of a single syllable word
Knowing that I SPOKE and she HEARD
Give her craft supplies and she knows what to make
As she B--L--O--W--S out the candles on her birthday cake
Embracing my hugs and returning my kiss
These are the blessings that are easy to miss

Children GROW at different rates
So progress is achieved on different dates
But each achievement must be shared
Because sharing shows WE CARE

Each song my sister sings is a SMILE she can bring
And each word she PROUDLY speaks is a mindset she can tweak
Ameliorating ignorance one person at a time
She's COMBATING INJUSTICE by confronting the crime

If DISBILITY = POWER
Then I should be proud
Why hide what makes me SPECIAL
When I can SHOUT my story loud?

And I'm sure this point of view
Isn't one that you knew
But if you had a disability
I hope you'd feel this way too.

Because I am your EQUAL
And that's easy to see
You just have to recall
That there's 2 parts of me

This is my body
And though it looks BROKEN
It holds no bearing on the                                                                                                                    ACTIONS & WORDS that I've spoken

I say again:

I am PROUD, STRONG, EMPOWERED, and ABLE
To S----P-----R------E--------A---------D my message and
Bring equality to the table.

I wrote this after I watched my mother cry as my youngest sister read her first book. You see, my baby sister has Down's syndrome and this milestone is one we never dreampt of her achieving. I couldn't be prouder of my sister and she reminds me every day that I too should be proud of my disabilities because despite public opinion, a disability is not an inherently limiting characteristic. Disability is a part of human diversity and I am PROUD to be disabled!
