Unmasked

For years I wore a mask

to hide my secret self.

It had a smile upon its face

and never frowned.

As time passed by I asked myself,

"Why should I hide?"

I am who I am,

and no one can take that from me.

They could raise me up

or tear me down,

but I will never allow them to take away my:

pride

compassion

love.

I took off the mask many years ago,

and I still smile for all the world to see.

I will love who see fit,

not who society deems correct.

My heart is mine to give to whomever I choose,

no matter what:

gender

religion

race

body type

intelligence.

What I know to be true is that,

love is love,

and I will love who I choose.
