Villanelle for a Stonemason

Our infatuation is a fickle monster by and by

I’ve been who I am, and yet me you do not know

Tell me, what it is you love about me and why

You don’t know that you don’t know, so I lie

For you I am not myself, I am someone faux

Fight, fight against the impending goodbye

I let a theory slip and get a harsh reply

That is not why you are here, no

Tell me, what it is you love about me and why

You’re wrong, she does not exist, the girl in your eye

But God, I could not bear it if you go

Fight, fight against the impending goodbye

Do not filter me. No longer can I comply

I am opinion, I am thought, I am your foe

Tell me, what it is you love about me and why

I am a girl who yells and schemes and speaks, I cry

Resent me now. Let the shrill shrew show.

Fight, fight against the impending goodbye

Tell me, what it is you love about me and why
