Voices Becoming Power

This isn’t a joke.

This isn’t a laughing matter.

This is what this country has become.

This country is many things

but together is not one.

We live in a country that is full of rights, yet they are being violated.

Skin being a huge factor in society as if the color of our skin defines who we truly are.

This country is full of hate and unlawful decisions that need to be brought upon

yet the only way to bring up a change about a topic is if many voices become one.

Why is it that so many voices must be addressing an issue for it to become an important matter?

Why is it that I cannot just stand here as a 17-year-old

hands balled into a fist,

clenched jaw,

dry mouth,

tense muscles as I speak

and use my voice.

My voice.

The voice that is

trembling as I speak,

the voice that is

so quiet yet so loud,

so soft yet so harsh,

so compelling yet so demanding.

Do not be afraid to be criticized,

because often you are criticized even before speaking your thoughts.

Your voice.

Is more than that high pitch or deep sound that comes out of your mouth;

it’s the way to express what you are truly about.

Your voice.

Embodies the amount of passion you have about a topic without a doubt.

Your voice.

Is more powerful than you may think

but you’ll never know till you actually begin to speak.

Speak for what you believe in.

Speak because you can.

Speak because you are not afraid.

Speak.
