The Wall

My future awaits atop this wall,

With slithering serpents and the highest of falls.

I look to see; it’s a thousand feet high,

And all I could say is “I’m going to die.”

They don’t call me Mason the brave, wise, and true,

If I can’t get past the admissions crew.

The Board of Admissions, a snake of some type,

Feeds on the weak and enjoys a good fight.

I call it BOA for its reputation:

Constricting your wallet ‘til it has no circulation.

The sky candle burns, bright for the battle,

While civilians disperse as if they were cattle.

My journey begins at the base of the climb,

Where BOA attacks with questions, all kinds.

I refute by stating my qualifications,

Only to hear, “Okay, what are your aspirations?”

My brain was shot, I forgot what to say.

I was only so focussed on entrance and pay.

What do I do after I leave here?

They say, “move on to college, there’s nothing to fear.”

I thought I had lost, the BOA had won,

Until I remembered, undeclared could be fun.

I climbed to the serpent to express my intentions.

In response she said, “Here’s your letter of acceptance.”

Once let through, the climb was smooth sailing;

I was happy I made it, first try, no failing.

Though hiccups appeared here and there, at first,

I know we’ll all make it, nobody’s that cursed.
