We forgot about what made America Great

America

A melting pot of people

Where the diversity is what is put into it,

A variety of cultures that come together to be one.

America

A group of people united under a single idea

Freedom.

Yet, today we build walls

To keep people out

To keep

The immigrants

The refugees

The people who wish for a better life

Maybe not for themselves

But for their children

Out

The walls are made to keep the American Dream

Out.

We built walls to protect ourselves,

but all we did was lock ourselves up.

In fear

We forgot our humanity

We forgot our past

We forgot about the people who came before us

Our great-grandparents

Our grandparents

Our parents

Our lovers.

We forgot about their struggles as refugees and immigrants.

We forgot about the Jews refugees we abandoned and sent back to Europe to have a quarter of them die in death camps.

We forgot about the Irish and Germans looking for a way to make a living

We forgot about the Vietnamese and Cuban fleeing communism

We forgot about what made America great

This poem is about:
My country
