What Happened to Our Vision?

1776 - A date to remember,
Joyous crowds and songs sounded,
Like no other,
With the last glowing ember,
From a fire that will never be smothered.

The United States of America,
A country fro the free,
With a flag of stripes and stars,
A country for you and me.

It was said to be the best in the world,
One that was unlike any other,
Men would have freedom,
And girls could have their pearls.

It was a country that arose,
From fighting and bloodshed,
And it wasn't supposed,
To become what it is instead.

Fast forward to the unexpected
To the most present time,
Where voices cry out unheard,
And are instead -
Smothered by the oppression,
That is placed upon them.

Schools are outrageous,
Costing young Americans a fortune,
All in the vision of filling their pockets,
And not in the vision of the children's misfortune.

A country that was made for men and women alike,
Though the constitution was unclear,
And women's battles were fought to win these rights,
And still they are suppressed,
By their male counterparts.

"Get back in the kitchen" -
Is that a joke,
It travels around our society,
And are placed on women,
Like the shoes they are supposed to fit.

The country was supposed to be amazing,
One that would be always hard to forget,
But it seems as if almost,
It is less than it admits.

Our battles are over the mediocre,
Almost forgotten in the media,
Innocents are killed everyday.
In the torture of the forgotten.

When will this country become what it entitles,
Maybe a person or a story will change,
What happened to the things that were forgetten,
And make it become the reality,
That it was supposed to be.
