What I’m Made Of

Fri, 05/03/2013 - 23:35 -- mbaby

I am from the many aunts and cousins on my dad’s side.
From the hellos and goodbyes taking an hour.
Devoting a whole day to preparing tamales with my cousins and aunts.
I am from tamales around Christmas time.

I am from a house that never sleeps.
Music screaming from the speakers and T.V.’s blaring.
I am from the caring and loving heart of my mom.
I am from “Do your best, that’s all I can ask.” and “You’re going to miss me when I’m gone.”

I am from the sarcastic and stubborn mouth of my dad.
I am from split spring breaks and torn apart summers.
I am from two homes and broken families that have been glued together over time.
I am from disappointment of my dad.

Tears of joy and tears of sadness is what I’m from.
Pictures hanging everywhere in my house.
Old pictures, baby pictures, and recent pictures on almost every wall.
I am from the memories in all the photographs.

I am from a room with clothes everywhere.
I am from pictures on all four walls.
Colorful, bright, cherished, unique.
I am from a room that is messy, but also organized.

Animal loving Grandma who couldn’t hurt a fly.
Blunt, opinionated, bold, passionate Aunt Tracie.
I am from “Watch out for those idiots!”
I am from “What’s your story, give me an update.”

Silly, emotional, hilarious, ridiculous, fragile, sensitive Little Sister.
I am from my sister being my other half.
I am from my mom being my rock.
I am from us three sticking together through it all.

I am from barbequed dinners almost every night.
Chicken and rice, chicken soup, chicken salads, chicken everything.
Corn on the cob and vegetables.
I am from cooking new dinners and “What’s that smell?!”

Pets everywhere, boxes scattered in every corner.
People sleeping, bedrooms crammed with belongings.
Bickering, snapping, laughing, crying.
I am from the “Can you feel the love.”
