What is a plantation?

Location

What is a plantation?

Not a field with a house,

Not a big white man and his lovely spouse

Not a black here and here

And there and there

Blacks everywhere

Working

Sweating under the moon

Singing mammy’s tune

What is a plantation?

Not the South or the war

The plantation lives even if ignored

It did not die in 1863

It did not die in the 60’s

It didn’t die in 2008

We have a black president

But the plantation still holds its weight

What is THE plantation?

Immortal and strong

It still holds its power

Upon us,

It still lives

It lives all day long.

What is the plantation?

Our life and our fate

We have a black president

But the plantation still holds its weight

Immigrants crying,

Social offices denying,

Blacks being frisked,

Look at all we have risked,

Salvation

To keep the plantation alive

White privilege,

Institutionalized,

Colored women, Latina women

Realized

They aren’t as beautiful as le Blanche female

What is the plantation?

Our society, our people

Everywhere,

Hatred, Bigotry

And the apathy

It kills.
