What Poetry has taught me
Growing up I thought emotions
Were to be kept down inside
Inside a growing ocean
Where they could always hide.
I always thought them unsightly
And rather unclean
I used to fight
To keep them unseen
Then I opened a poetry book
Just to see what it would say
And I didn’t know what that look
Would teach me that day.
As I read each poem
I began to see
Emotions throughout that tome
And what they could be
The poets’ emotions
Were beautiful
And all of my notions
About them were actually frightful
Poetry has taught
This emotion fighter
That feeling isn’t for naught
And is important for being a writer
So now I show how I feel
In my writing and in my life
Poetry has broken the seal
On my feelings with it’s beautiful knife
