What We Were

We are no longer kids with pigtails and braces

On the cusp of winning bicycle races

We are adults and we have grown older and bolder

With more responsibilities to shoulder

The environment is breaking and cracking

Sea turtles in the ocean are lacking

The sun is hot and so are we

We only have one shot to save the trees

Everyones dying as bullets ricochet

Another shooting marks the calendar today

People push, pull, and shove

They spread hate instead of love

Kids are locked in cages

Others die on minimum wages

We read the news and sing the blues

What the hell are we going to do

All this bad in the world that we’ve heard our whole lives

Were we ever really children?
