Where I Am From
I’m from diligence
Nights of practicing
Until my fingers are sore
I’m from “You can do better”
Though perfection is never achieved
That is the ultimate goal
I’m from moist double chocolate cake
Homemade with my mother’s love
Four times a year this joy is shared
Each year the amount of candles grew
The singing got better
With the added “Scooby Scooby Do’s” and “Cha cha cha’s”
From the plastic birthday girl tiara to a real one
The same person blew out the candles
Though it did not seem so
I’m from the oddly color pink room
Shared between Josey and me
We played
Laughed
Cried
And yelled here
Always together
The sound of the bin full of Barbies always in sight
Our squeaky voices filled the room
Overlapping each other
Always trying to get the last word
I’m from leave me alone
Go away
The once best friend
Now my foe
I’m from the bristly fake Christmas tree
Decorated with Santa Clauses in every corner
My nonna’s beautiful ornaments
All glistening in the light
My once pocket-sized hands too small to hold them
Now proudly put them on the green branch
The fuss made over who will put the angel
Now easily decided
All without the screaming
Whining
Children
I’m from parties at the Godparents’ house
Always blasting salsa music
The room filled with spices
Peruvian food brewing constantly
The laughs exploding as my Godfather told his jokes
Though I could not understand them
I laughed too
Now the house is not as lively
The music no longer blasting
My Godfather now gone
