Where I’m From

By: Kaleigh Kelso

(Imitation poem from George Ella Lynon)

I’m from the ultimate mixed family

From half sisters, step sisters, and adopted brothers

I am from the SpongeBob and Scooby doo shaped mac and cheese

(They always tasted better than original)

I am from the Branson Missouri summers,

Silver Dollar City

Whose hand dyed candles I remember

As if I did them yesterday

I ‘m from the chocolate chip waffle and strawberry pop-tart nutritious breakfasts

From the 2 houses I live between

I’m from the kids eat free Tuesdays

            And the half-day kindergartens

From the Disney princesses and VCR tapes

I’m from the “Jesus loves me this I know

For the bible tells me so”

And disposable cameras on vacations

I’m from Bud and Sally’s Branch

Marie and Chyle’s Branch

From the power puff girls Saturday

            Morning cartoons

The daddy daughter dances in the living room at age 4

Every time I look to the past

My family has always been at my side

Their love and comfort has never left me

Never failed

You can’t choose your family,

But I wouldn’t have it any other way
