Where Were You?

Where were you,

When I needed you most?

Did you run when you heard my cry?

Did you look me in the eye and tell me it'll be alright?

Did you hold my hand when I couldn't take it anymore?

Did you hold me close or was it too much a chore?

No, no, you didn't.

In fact, nobody did.

I ran when I heard myself cry.

I told myself I would be alright.

I held my hand when I couldn't take it anymore.

I held me close and it wasn't a chore.

You were never there.

But I was always there for you.

And that is what hurts the most.

The question that always comes back for a toast.

Where were you?
