Why Beautiful?

O beautiful for spacious skies, once blue and simply plain; now filled with many factories, we seek to turn it grey.O beautiful for pilgrim's feet, from nina made in spain; though not the worst, remembered first for whites and blacks made slave.O beautiful for heroes proved, through strife, depression, war; that decades passed would see us through, to bring us back and more.O beautiful for patriots dream, though first intent forgot; thy faithfulness  would lead you back, and to abandon not.America, how far you are, from where you ought to be. Though not by haste, no better place than sea to shining sea.

To borrow a common expression, America:

Isn't where it needs to be, and is far from where it ought to be, but thank God it's not where it used to be.

America has the potential to be great; but will only get there if we can keep the principles we were founded upon.
