Within Reach

Dear Mom and Dad,

It’s in sight now, and I can finally see

The finish line, it’s within reach for me.

I know you want me to be the best I can be,

But at the end of the day, what I will be is me.

I know you love me, but you’re loving me wrong.

If I don’t do this myself how will I ever grow strong?

I appreciate everything you have done,

But life is a race, and only I can run.

You have done your job, and it’s time to cut the rope,

It’s all up to me if I sink or float

Parents were made to suffocate and restrain,

But the time has come to let loose the reins

You’ve raised a boy to a man and his destination’s the clouds,

And I will ensure this boy will make you nothing but proud.

It’s getting close now, and I can really see

The finish line, it’s within reach for me.

Roads are long, with harsh twists and turns,

But with every great bump, there is something new to learn.

It’s time to greet life with a grand entrance.

It’s time to learn the harsh realities of independence

This road ahead is long and frightening,

But I am charged and buzzing, just like lightning.

Something about beginnings is always so exciting,

And whatever life throws at me, I’ll be surviving.

It’s all within reach now, and wouldn’t you believe

The finish line, it’s right here in front of me.
