Words Left Unheard

I sit, my phone is in my hand and my heart beating fast

Captions says, Another Black Man Killed by Police

A video is linked. The video starts.

The man’s name is Eric Garner, a name that will never be forgotten.

I close my eyes, I cannot watch.

I close my eyes, I cannot watch.

I can’t breathe, he says.

I can’t breathe.

I can’t breathe.

Almost like if it was on repeat.

I can’t breathe.

I can’t breathe.

I can’t breathe.

It grows fainter now, almost a whisper.

I can’t breathe.

I can’t breathe.

I can’t breathe.

It sounds like…he can’t breathe officer.

I can’t breathe.

I can’t breathe.

And then silence. Another voice silenced.

Worlds unheard by the men in uniforms but heard by we the people.

By we the people who saw a man killed on camera and yet no justice.

By we the people who will no longer be silenced.

By we the people who will stand together as one.

By we the people whose words will not be left unheard.
