In a World Without Swimming Lessons

Location

Air has been getting lighter since I was pushed in,

Feels like forever ago.

Water has been getting murkier the deeper I sink,

Roof hidden from the low.

Bottom has been getting prettier the longer I’m swimming,

They said go with the flow.

Lifeguards have been here and gone,

Seemed more for show.

Friends on the surface have been telling me how to swim,

But I already know.

I try to save myself with someone else,

But the strong swimmers either left the water

Or are doing laps,

Waiting for someone to start kicking.
