The Hate U Give (THUG) Scholarship Slam — CLOSED

Join the THUG Slam and be eligible to win awesome prizes from an even more awesome movie. Interested? Keep reading to find out how to win.

What is THUG? The Hate U Give is a major motion picture based on Angie Thomas' award-winning, bestselling novel. In the film, Starr Carter (played by Amandla Stenberg), is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, predominantly black neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white private school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressure from both communities, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right. We want to know how you do the same.

How have you found your voice and used it to advocate for what you believe in?

We've partnered with The Hate U Give because we know that standing up for what you believe in starts with sharing your stories. Your voice is more powerful than you can imagine, and advocating for what's right — even in the face of adversity — is the only way to incite positive change. Is there a cause you're passionate about that you've stood up for? Maybe you're just learning how to find your voice. What is that process like? Do you code-switch between cultures/communities? Share your story with your art.

This Scholarship Slam has four categories: Poetry, Film Shorts, Music, and Visual Art (including photography, illustration, painting, sculpture, etc.). Each entry will be judged within its designated category. Each category will have a GRAND PRIZE of a $500 scholarship and several RUNNER-UP PRIZES including movie merch like a copy of The Hate U Give book and movie soundtrack.

Note: All entries must include a note about the group that referred you to this page. Just include PowerPoetry.org if you found this on our site.

** This is a merit-based slam. Your entries will be evaluated by the Power Poetry team along with a panel of judges who specialize in the arts: poetry, film, music, and visual art.  **
