Slam on Miss America

Sound off on crowing of Miss America 2013--and its aftermath!

The internet exploded after Nina Davuluri, an Indian-American, won the 2013 Miss America Crown. An article featured on Buzzfeed, which quickly went viral, highlights a collection of hateful tweets about Davuluri's perceived ethnic and religious identity. Some of these tweeters also expressed their dismay at Miss Davuluri's win so close to 9-11, calling it a "slap in the face." (Davuluri is American-born and none of the tweets above are based on facts about her ethnic identity.)

In her response to the social media aftermath, Davuluri, who ran on a pageant platform titled "celebrate diversity through cultural compentency," issued this statement:

“I have to rise above that,” said Davuluri. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”

“I’m so happy [Miss America] has embraced diversity,” she said. “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”
