TEACHER GOALS

  • Learn engagement strategies for powerful writing
  • Discover the personal story of a student who took poetry skills beyond the classroom to initiate a call to action and promote positive change in the community
  • Promote benefits of social impact through poetry

STUDENT GOALS

  • Become familiar with a real-life example of how the skills of writing poetry/public speaking can be used to make important, positive changes in one's community

TEACHER DO NOW

  • Queue up the video from Lesson #9 on Udemy
  • After video, arrange desks/chairs in the classroom in a circle to create a warm, supportive, interactive space for students and teachers to communicate

STUDENT DO NOW

  • Create a list of areas in the community that could be improved (education, resources, extra-curricular activities, appearance, etc.)

MINI-LESSON/ACTIVITY

  • For the first 5 minutes of class, students will watch the video from Lesson #9 on Udemy to learn Aurelis' story
  • As a class, students will take 20 minutes to discuss the areas of improvement from their lists and how poetry and the writing/speaking tools they have learned could be used as a positive force to create these changes
  • The remainder of class will be dedicated to reviewing PowerPoetry's 7 Tips for Writing a Poem About Something You Want to Accomplish as a class, and combining these guidelines with students' ideas for using poetry for social change

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL

HOMEWORK

  • Students will take inspiration for Aurelis' actions and the Tip Guide reviewed in class to write a brief bulleted list (5-10 examples) of how they see themselves rallying for a positive change in one aspect of the community
  • Students will write a companion poem to be used along with their list
