Broken, they stormed the streets
At night with hearts full of heat
And hands cold as space
A need to feel alive
A need to eat their flaws
And sleep in til sunset
Clutching to eternity
Between dawn and dusk
Melting to the insides of unlit cigarettes
As their unfulfilled lives
Waned and waxed with
Each opened bottle of coke
Zeroing in on the reasons
For their loneliness
Zeroing in on the reasons
They couldn’t bring themselves
To face the sun
Or walk alone, or stay sober
For longer than a thought or two
Mixing sugar with insomnia
Doubt with false euphoria
Placing trust in those with similar symptoms
Until it all fell apart
Until they fell apart
And liquified on door steps next to signs
For reasonably priced liquor
