I learned the reality of whiteness when I walked into a classroom and I was the only student with a culture that my classmate’s ancestors have tried to erase.

and I'm supposed to raise my hand when they speak about slavery as just a time period ? Just a phase that the country had to have in order to make progress ?

Am I supposed to remind them that the only way to make America great is to not just learn about the past but change the future?

because when I leave the classroom and walk outside I am greeted by the chant “Make America Great Again” codewords for “Make America White Again”.

Now , I am not saying that it’s white against blacks or that learning about our past is a waste of time, I am just making sure that we realize that things like inequality isn’t just a thing of the past.

We tell ourselves that “things are better now” but are they ? Because last time I checked, oppression of people of color is still very much relevant today.

The suffering of the past will be our future unless we change it in the present.
