2016: 365 Days of Cheap Candy

2016 was a piñata full of cheap candy.

All around, everyone was chirping dale, dale, dale.

Drive-bys.

Ya le diste uno.

Crooked landlords.

Ya le diste dos.

Racist cops.

Ya le diste tres.

And it didn’t stop there.

Dale, dale, dale.

Assault.

Maybe you should just leave.

Denial.

 Speak English, you’re in America.

Until finally—

Y tu tiempo se acabó.

No.

Aquí es mi casa.

Aprende Español.

We threw out the candy.

                                    English Version

2016 was a piñata full of cheap candy.

All around, everyone was chirping go, go, go.

Drive-bys.

You've hit it once.

Crooked landlords.

You've hit it twice.

Racist cops.

You've hit it three times.

And it didn’t stop there.

Go,go,go.

Assault.

Maybe you should just leave.

Denial.

Speak English, you’re in America.

Until finally—

You're time is up.

No.

This is my home.

Learn Spanish.

We threw out the candy.

I'm a college student and I believe there are different kinds of hunger. I was born with a hunger for education; literature and writing.
