#26

As I saw you sprint across the field
dodging players in your way
memories began to flutter in my head
as I drifted back to that day

It was summer.
You were 4 and I was 10.
We’d wake up at 7, & make ham sandwiches.
Locked ourselves in my closet-sized room
and sat in front of my dusty box TV.
PS2 controller in my hands battling 2D evil pigs
with an ice boomerang and a fire hammer.
We had to save Tabby, Tomba’s BFF.
You were young but you wouldn’t fight for a turn.
You’d just watch me play with amusement
and clap when I would win but say it was ok
when I would lose.
You were my #1 fan.
The best friend I didn’t choose.

Touchdown!
Roles have changed  & I’m in the stands
cheering when you win.
Buying you Takis when you lose.
because now
I’m your #1 fan.
