6/31/21

In an empty house

where a home was built

remains the memory of us

the tall ceilings that echoed our laughs and screams

the L shaped counter that we both wanted so badly

the outlines of where our pictures hanged

the prints of our angsty feet

the space that displayed our first Christmas tree

the hair of human and puppy

the windows large enough for all the world to see

the home we built

just you and me

It’s hard to believe that this is how it ends

as I think back to how it began

And as I stand in the doorway

one last time

I can’t help but cry

because the place that was once a home

is now an empty house

So with a defeated grin

I take a deep breath

whisper your names

and promise to meet again

whether in this life or the next

I'm always wishing you the best.
