A January Thaw
The sodden field becomes exposed as the blanket of snow steadfastly recedes, adhering only to the trunks of barren trees. Winter's icy grip has loosened, its cold heavy armor come undone by mild gentle breezes. The unrelenting stillness broken by sparrows chirping, water dripping and squirrels scampering about. The grey sheath of ice on the lake becomes dotted by pools of water, eerily black in its still cold reflection. Tree branches unyieldingly stiff in the frigid air sway more freely as southern winds caress its tips. This January thaw will soon enough end, deferring once again to winter's abiding dominion. But its welcome appearance provides the hopeful promise of budding trees, buzzing bees and warm sunny days to come.
