Abandoned Books

The tower crumbles with no prisoner to keep it safe

The apple rots with no victim to keep it whole

The roses wilt with no beast to lock away

And the demons fall with no children left to play

A world of fairies and evil collapses

And the simple props find themselves alone

What is the mirror without its queen

What good is a spindle with no curse to make it gleam

Straw houses stand at attention waiting to fall

But with no wind, they’re trapped by their walls

The stories fade, and heroes turn to dust

The witches grow old and swords turn to rust

The land once rife with suspense and joy

Is frozen in time, a broken toy

Light shines as day begins

Something’s changed, tales begin

The empty fields are filled with wheat

And empty chairs are taken seats

The story starts and whispers stop

A new home for the once lost props
