Abandonment

Abandonment is the off-white color of a dusty wall; It sounds like the slam of a door And tastes like a sugarless sugar cookie. It smells like a musty room And looks like an empty one. In it I feel that emptiness. Abandonment is the color of a clear teardrop. It sounds like the pitter-patter of rain on a window, And tastes of curdled milk. It smells like sour mold. It looks like tire tracks left in the snow. It makes me feel left out. Abandonment is the black color of lights turned out. It sounds like a falling tree in an uninhabited forest. It tastes like a lettuce-only salad And smells like burnt Christmas dinner. It looks like a single teardrop on a hopeful face, A face that is feeling lonely. Abandonment is the unjust loss of what once was good.

This poem was used as an outlet for feelings during my struggles with my parents' divorce.
