Abosorbed
As we wake from our innocent slumber,
We immediately look at the reflection from the opposite end of the mirror,
Failing to capture the bird’s early morning songs
And the suns first glorious rays as they blanket the land.
While out in nature near a mass of soothing water,
We focus our sight on the reflection casted back at us,
Ignoring the tranquil water as fishes scurry past one another
And the moon waving back at us through its own reflection.
Here and there we smile at our phone cameras,
Capturing one of many photos taken of our unchanging face
Missing the one chance we had to view a vibrant melodious butterfly
And a miniscule squirrel with its plump cheeks scurrying by to feed its young.
Soon, we will be looking through the eyes of others
Not to enjoy the curls and twists of the rods and cones
But to view ourselves from the reflection that is projected.
I dread the day when we will no longer see the natural beauty presented to us,
But rather only the beauty in ourselves.
Great God! -- I’d rather be mute, unable to speak for my liberty,
Than to be blind to the mystical night and day.
Sure, we are magnificent mystical creatures capable of most anything
But we are put to a halt when we put our uniqueness above natures.
When there are no longer vibrant songs sung by the birds in the yard,
When there are no longer fish galloping past each other in the water,
And when there are no longer butterflies dancing through the air,
Only then will we focus on the world surrounding us.
We must save the human race now
By nurturing our land with love and attention.
It is only with diligent effort and dedication
That we will stop the demise of the human race.
It is time that we acknowledge nature’s prevailing power
And preserve it for posterity to savor
As we have failed to do.
