The Absence of Creates the Longing for
Sound echoing off of hollow walls
Makes you realize the lack of space
You contain
You, meaning me, of course
Because you aren’t something
That can understand pain
You’re the anti-something
You’re worse than nothing
Loss.
I’ve known you intimately
Given you everything
Despite your need for more
Can you believe I’m thanking you?
I can’t
But I am, and here it is
Thank you
I never realized what I had
‘Till it was gone
Cliché. I know.
Its too true though
I never knew pain
Until we met
It took me getting
Ground to dust
In order to become something
I didn’t realize how the
World could be so terrible
That it makes you want
To fix it
Didn’t realize that being hurt
By people you love
Could make you want to
Love people even more
Just so they don’t become
As hateful as you feel.
I know who I am now
I’ll always have a void within
Me, due to you,
Except now I know to fill it
With actions meant to enrich
Instead of drain
The world used to be
Black and white
Now its grey
And its so much better
I know now that not everything
Is as beautiful
As it was before I met you
Nor is it as grotesque
As I later believed
The world is, essentially,
Exactly what it is
Good or bad or netreul.
Doesn’t matter.
We make our own realities
And finally I know
What I want mine to be.
I want to be a better version
Of myself, fit to live
The world around me and
Prevent other people’s voids
From swallowing them whole.
This sounds ideal to me.
As ideal as a vastly grey
World can be which
Is all we can hope for,
I think. I also think that
I’ve finally found a purpose,
A sense of what is and isn’t
Important to me now.
And I owe this,
This new ambition,
This new outlook,
This new me,
All to you.
So thank you.
