An Abyss
I fell in a hole today.
Actually, I’ve been there for a while.
But I keep getting back up and falling back in.
And the fall grows a bit longer each time.
The ground, gets a bit harder.
The first time I fell, you pushed me in.
And my heart broke when I hit the ground.
But the hole wasn’t that deep.
So I climbed out, and I was angry.
Fire burnt from my eyes to the soles of my feet.
But I slipped on the fire, and fell back in.
That time, the impact broke my conscience.
And your hole got deeper.
I climbed out, but I couldn’t feel, anything.
I turned and stared into this, growing abyss.
And it looked back at me.
Challenging me.
So I stepped forward.
And that time, my sight shattered.
I clawed my way out, but I couldn’t see you there.
You had left.
It was just me, and the abyss.
So I spread my arms like wings, and fell backwards.
Like a dying dove.
I laid there, far beyond six feet under.
And I realized, I couldn’t climb out this time.
I told myself it was your fault, that this was your hole.
And it was yours, at one point.
But I had turned it into something much deeper, and darker.
It was mine now.
It was just me, and my abyss.
