Achieving Perfection
As we develop through childhood,
Parents tell us to not be bad, but to be good.
When we ask why, they refer to the Great Almighty:
Always loving, never hating;
However always having a stick up way too tightly.
They tell us that He has a plan,
that no matter what we do, they will always be proud.
So if this is the case, then why must they compare us to others?
To our sisters and to our brothers?
Are we mistakes or are we perfect?
For incentive, for motivation?
In any case, it increases levels of intimidation.
Always afraid to be who we are,
afraid that we'll never reach that bar.
But I feel more comfort when looking outside of religion,
The result of evolution, causing less confusion.
Order from chaos, existence from nonexistence.
Nothing makes sense, yet everything does.
When we look at a tree, we know its whole life cycle
We have the knowledge to understand the world around us,
But have difficulty understanding ourselves.
Are we mistakes or are we perfect?
So how do we explain all our defects?
Are we mistakes or are we perfect?
As a tree grows from a seed, so do we grow from our choices.
For all our weaknesses, and for all our strengths,
Our greatest mistake is believing we aren't perfect.
