An acknowledgement

An Acknowledgement

By Ami

Hi, my name’s Depression

Y’know, siblings with anxiety

Cousin to addiction

My parents are abuse and abandonment

Yeah, you’ve heard of me

But do you know me

Not like scientists do

At least, they pretend to

I can’t be cured or fixed

And most people pretend I don’t exist

“It’s just a phase”

“Grow up”

“You’re fine”

But you’re not, are you?

We’re not

I’m not trying to hurt you

I just want to help

Sometimes, things get bad

And I mean bad

When was the last time

You didn’t feel guilty

Saying “I’m ok, it’s nothing”

Why do you ignore me?

I’m not leaving

The least you can do is

Try, right?

Wrong

That’s why I’m here

You forgot how to try

You forgot what to do

You forgot how to

Make yourself happy

Maybe it is their fault

Maybe we’re all to blame

But that doesn’t matter

I’m here to stay

Does that mean it’s

Hopeless?

No

Sure, you can’t cure me

Not with pills

Not with therapy

Because those don’t really

Do anything

“I’ve heard this before”

“Let me help you”

“What you have is common”

It’s all BS

You’re rare, so no one

Will ever truly understand

No one has ever lived

Your life

It hurts, knowing

So many people suffer

And others use it

For profit

It’s messed up

All the while,

They smile

And they pretend they understand

It’s not fair

I wasn’t made for

Your worthless entertainment

I’m not here

So you can laugh at

Those poor children

Who feel they have nothing

I was made so you

Horrid, useless

Selfish people learn

That your problems

Don’t matter

There are kids

Who feel worthless

Teens who want

Nothing more than

Death because

No one listens or

Pays any mind

You look at their tear-stained faces

Their bloodshot eyes

And their bandaged wrists

But you do nothing

I’m not something

you can play off

As “It’s not real”

I’m real

And I’m mad

No, not mad

Outraged

The beautiful people

I  created have

Been ignored, laughed at,

And tossed away

Like trash

I will not stand it

Pump them

Pump us

Full of “medicine”

Run from us

Throw us in the dirt

It does nothing

I will come back stronger

We will never stop

Until you learn

That we are not

Diseased

I am not

A disorder

Or a disability

We can’t be changed

We are who we are

And you can’t stand it

Can you?

You can’t take

The fact that we

Aren’t what you want

And we don’t care

The fact that you

Don't know better than us

Infuriates you

Just knowing that

Your "help" does

Nothing doesn't

Phase you

But seeing that

We know it's useless

And don't want it

Irks you to no end

As if we are

Stealing money from

You, but you know

That money

Is made from our hearts

So it is you who is stealing

Our time, our money,

And our voices

But we will not

be silenced

If we have a wish to

Speak up,

We will

We will speak proudly

You will try to

silence us

But you can't

We will shout

Our problems

And counter your

Fake happiness

With our darkened comfort

We are happy

With who we are

So leave us alone

There are hundreds of thousands of us

Yes, no one can live someone’s

Life exactly,

But they still know how it feels

So they can help when, if, it’s needed

Sure, my name’s depression

But I’m not bad

I make you stronger

Or, I make you see you’re not

Alone

Either way, if you can live through me,

Even if you can’t

I will always be there

And I will always bring help to

You

Please listen to what I have

Told you here,

And don’t try to

Make them talk

Let them do what they

Feel they need to

-With love,

Depression
