Across the Gravel Drive

My branches reach across the gravel drive

I feel so strong and oh, feel so alive

But he who walks does cut my branches down

And I do ache from leaves down to the ground

My roots stay strong but how my arms have throbbed

For pride is lost and branches have been robbed

Where once I'd given cover to the road

He's leaving me and with him is his load

There will be time when I will finally grow

But I will have to wait through ice and snow

Then I will stretch across the pebbled lane

Again there will be fresh new sun and rain

But I know that he will one day return

And once again I'll feel my branches burn
